Hybridity Produced an AV installation “Passages” during the Transmission Conference in Victoria. We worked with Jeremy Greenspan (Junior Boys) to create an experience which mimicked the sounds and feeling of the Pacific Northwest. The routes of the BC ferries were interlaced within the ambient projections, and the visuals were projected on the windows of the BC Ferries building.
About the Audio:
The audio is a combination of synthesized and acoustic sound. A scanner is used to hone in on the frequency used by BC Ferrys for internal communication. The combination of voices and radio static is fed into a modular synthesizer, which turns the noise into rhythmic patterns meant to mimic the sounds of the ocean. Additionally sounds of sampled fog horns and other nautical sound sources were fed into a delay unit synced to the synthesizer creating a pastiche of musique concrete interspliced with polyrhythmic pulses.
